You know what’s better than a present? A custom-designed present that someone made just for you. And while an angel tree ornament made out of macaroni and hot glue is a truly special gift, we’re thinking of something a bit more… advanced.
That’s where NIKEiD comes in. Basically it’s Nike giving you the only other thing you could want out of its shoes, which is to be able to customise them (in colour and often material) from the laces down to the sole.
To fully appreciate these awesome options, we designed fantasy pairs for five different outstanding public figures (fictional and otherwise) we think could use some great trainers. Check ‘em out!
Nike Flyknit iD for Angela Merkel
The world saw a different side of Frau Merkel this summer when she expressed her unfettered excitement over Germany’s place at the World Cup final (and they hadn’t even won yet). It certainly endeared her to us more than the solemn face she normally shows to the media.
It’s likely she already has some Deutschland-coloured trainers, but if not, we think these are positively spiffing.
Nike Free 5.0 iD for Prince George
While any tiny shoe Prince George wears is immediately crowned Most Adorable in All the Land, we designed these to be both patriotic and practical. He’s going to tear it up in Buckingham, mark our words.
Nike Air Pegasus 83 iD for Tilda Swinton
This elegant, inimitable actress has had quite the year: from an ethereal vampiress to a violent dictators mouthpiece, she further displayed her metamorphic abilities.
We recently learned that she loves the sea, and so designed these with the colours to reflect that — as well as a custom I.D. on the backs that remind all followers exactly who they’re dealing with.
Nike SB Zoom Stefan Janoski Premium Pendleton iD for Benedict Cumberbatch (Limited Edition)
Handsome, classy shoes for a handsome, classy man. We imagine him wearing these to his mum’s on Boxing Day — or you know, on the Annual Cumberbatch Family Yacht Tour of Capri.
Nike Lunarglide 6 iD for Katniss Everdeen
Come on, Nikes would totally be a District 1 staple — and Cinna would no doubt procure a customised version to help the Girl on Fire survive the dreaded Games. We think these would at least put the best-dressed odds in her favour.
