There’s no two ways about it: interviews are stressful. You’re trying to make a good impression by smiling and not mispronouncing any words, while also remembering your most impressive accomplishments and trying to come up with three words to describe yourself. We need a glass of wine just thinking about it.

The last thing you need to be worried about is your outfit — or more importantly, how much you spent on it.

We asked savvy personal stylist Catherine Robertson of CR Styling for her expert tips on how to look your best, and most professional, without breaking the bank. Here’s what she said, and don’t forget to check her out on Instagram @crstyling.

With so much choice available on the high street, it’s easy to dress for an interview on a budget. Just stick to my rules:

Keep it simple and classic

Stick to classic colours, styles and tailoring and you won’t go wrong.

And if you don’t have a well-tailored white oxford, get one!

Work a trouser suit

The trouser suit is back in fashion and the perfect outfit for an interview. Keep trousers tapered for a chic tailored look, and pair them with a plain coloured top or white shirt for a classic, smart look.

This black suit from Next is timeless and a work-wear wardrobe staple:

Try a simple and stylish dress

If trousers really aren’t your thing, then wear a simple, elegant dress. Dresses are always more cost-effective than a skirt and top, and generally look smarter. Make sure it has sleeves and is not too short or low cut. (Our rule on length is that it should at least skim tops of your knees when you’re standing.)

I love this one from Boden:

Stick to kitten heels

You don’t want to totter into your interview so don’t wear 10 inch heels — and never expose your toes.

Black kitten heel court shoes from Zara are a footwear staple.

Wear a smart coat

First impressions count, so don’t turn up in your old tatty coat hoping no one will notice.

This gorgeous camel coat from River Island is a must-have.

Carry a classic work bag

Complete your look with a smart bag. Make sure it’s simple in design and a dark colour.

This black mock croc skin bag from H&M is an unbeatable value.
